In the Internet’s earliest years, website addresses always ended with one of seven three-letter abbreviations: .net, .gov, .edu, .mil, .int, .org and .com. These suffixes are called top-level domains. To make them meaningful, a sub domain need to be added before the dot ; Example : Google.com, Yahoo.com
These initial set of top-level domains got company when we had country-code domains like .in for India and .ca for Canada etc.
Here comes the biggest changes in the world of internet domains : a massive expansion of Internet address domains is happening beyond the well-known .com, .net, and .org.
A photographer today can have a website ending with .photography instead of .com, Someone in reality business can have .realtor website. There are hundreds of new domains are available to register. There are brand names like .ibm, .youtube and .bmw. There are geographic names like .paris, .budapest and .berlin. There are business terms like .beer, .dentist, .pizza and .plumbing. There are broad categories like .xyz, .pink, .email, .work and .website
What’s the challenge now ?
First and foremost challenge is the lack of awareness at the users end. No business will be interested to have a website like www.abc.realtor at this point as it will be confusing for a major chunk of consumers to realise that it is the website address for the company. Another challenge is a rat’s nest of global trademark complications as companies try to protect their brands on hundreds of new Internet domains.
But the new domain names are here to stay, and businesses and consumers must adjust to the new reality. ICANN approved hundreds of the applications for the new domains, and 400 plus domains are on the Internet already
Well, the .com suffix had special meaning for the first generation of Internet users. For children born this century, it’ll be just one fish in the sea.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a nonprofit organization that is responsible for the coordination of maintenance and methodology of several databases of unique identifiers related to the namespaces of the Internet, and ensuring the network’s stable and secure operation.
