Facebook Messenger user base crossed 500 million monthly active users, more than doubling the size of its base in the last six months.Facebook has cut off access to in-app chat and forced users to install Messenger to send, receive, and read messages. Facebook Messenger was first introduced in 2011, but the decision to remove chat from Facebook native app has helped the company to reach the new milestone.
When Facebook Messenger app was introduced, it struggled to catch on people mainly because people didn’t felt a need to install another app when it was accessible within native Facebook app. Moreover Facebook had bought WhatsApp for huge sum early in 2014 and people didn’t find a reason to install another app for messaging.
But Facebook had no plans to give up on their own messaging effort and they proved that by asking PayPal CEO David Marcus to take over Messenger in April. Marcus has years of experience in mobile payments, which Facebook is exploring as a way to make money off messaging. The decision worked well and along with WhatsApp the company has over 1 billion active messaging users.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that people use Facebook Messenger in different ways than they use WhatsApp. “Messaging is one of the few things people do more than social networking,” Zuckerberg said in a recent town hall-style Q&A .
Facebook Messenger app not only offers the opportunity to share text messages with individuals and groups, but also photos, videos, stickers and free calls over Wi-Fi and 3G. “With Messenger, you can reach people instantly,” the company wrote on its Newsroom blog. “It is just as fast as SMS but gives you the ability to express yourself in ways that SMS can’t. You can send stickers or videos, take selfies, chat with groups and make free calls.”
We can expect more features on the app as the blog ends saying “This is an exciting milestone but with a half billion people relying on Messenger to communicate and connect, it is also a reminder that there is so much left for us to do.”
